all right yesterday we discussed fractions and we did a map that looks like this at the end of today I will start something brand-new come Monday yes they were talking about fractions and all the things we knew about fractions now today I am going to start the introduction of connecting mixed fractions with improper fractions above before that we're going to review yesterday we said there are a couple things we knew about fractions we said that we never add or subtract the bottom number which is a denominator that's an absolutely true statement we also said that the numerator which is the top number as the things that we want to know what the questions really asking us to understand or it could be the Shaded part or they can word it say which is not and then that would represent your numerator as well we can simplify fractions with me is to reduce and we use the vision and guess what you're going to understand that little better today because I'm going to model that for you all right where we are going is simplify a fraction and we are going to use the vision to prove it and sometimes we can get our answers as a whole numbers and I'm going to explain to you what that really means whole numbers in a fraction and whole numbers in a fraction we're really talking about mixed fractions well we have a whole number in the numerator and denominator come next year you will be required to convert fractions into decimals and in sixth grade jewelry required to convert fractions to decimals to percents so everything you're learning now you will still use and quite frankly you'll be using it for every math class you ever take all the way through college passions is one of the big components of your math right we said fractions are part of a whole but they could have whole numbers as well and I'm going to model that for you we can only add or subtract the numerator the top number only when the bottom numbers are the same and as you progress with your math I'm not going to say the same denominator I'm going to say the word common denominator and that's how I'm going to start referring to it so you get used to it and we talked about picture models with a fraction race all right so I'm going to show you a different picture model of a mixed fraction today and I'm going to even show you what the kids make the most mistakes on when they don't understand fractions at the picture model so I'm going to show you that too next we have fractions as equal parts and whenever we talk about fractions we have got to make sure we're especially when you in the picture model that it represents all right talk about an improper fraction with the top number the numerator is larger than the bottom number which is your denominator and I'm going to relate this with your mixed fraction today and we talked about your footman fractions as well so we are going to do a lot of what you see up here today all right so you'll be taking some notes be organized with your note today eighth of April if you have questions just raise your hands or for those of you on Zoom I just call out open up your mind and call out my name so I can hear you because I'm not at my dad so yesterday you did your fraction races how many of you guys felt wow I have a better understanding a fraction right and yesterday I also showed you how we can use the standard algorithm to compare fractions and yet two rules to follow all right yeah this is real quick no always work so my suggestion to you is whenever you are taking an assessment a test a project whatever it is if you're required to do the picture model do the picture auto check to see if it's a true you did it correctly using the standard algorithm that okay so before I start on the mixed fractions to go into my improper what I want to do first is go back to this I'm just be careful with it okay to go to this again real quick show me pasty rule one says the numerator the first fraction multiplied with their denominator the second and make sure we have the numerator is since the two is on the left side I write the two x 28 on the left manta5 is on the sides or five times the three is on the right hand side and then just simple math multiplication calculations right and then we figured out that the was definitely larger than 5/8 not by much and we even saw that in our picture model our fraction race so now my question is can we figure out using this model dissolve where does equal it says which is a correct statement which one is true that means you're going to have incorrect answers can we still use this strategy on problems like this with an equal sign in the middle who thinks they know the answer I have one how many hours I can have maybe I think I hope alright you call me do you think we can still use the same method strategy to solve this Kobe yes yes tell me why why do you think we can because we can we can we can only use the number we can use the numeral and keep and keep up the novel nater the same or we can you make a model okay so we can use a picture model maybe we can fit the true statement and then you said that we can take the numerator and then multiply with the denominator the chief thing is and you're correct but you have to finish out your thought process take the first fraction numerator and then take the second fraction denominator and multiply those together and make sure it's on the correct side right and I can use the same thing here and I'm going to go through this fairly quickly let's see if it works looking at answer Choice a 2/3 is equal to 5/8 all right let's see if I take my which is on my left side it is too and at the multiply that with what I'm seven and then I'm going to see if my equal sign the man on the right hand I'm going to write 5 time great and we know that 2 * 7 is so his 14 years Michael sound like 5 * 3 is that a true statement this is what they do this little symbol equal sign with a little line going through a diagonal that means it is not equal that was not true so now I go to be three times what is equal set time for what 3 * 9 27 and is this 24 or those equal no and by default it's only a 3 answers you know this going to work I see if it does though I left side one time a is equal to 4 times the two years age is that true so therefore this is your grand and some more less than symbols you just follow this it will work okay and in your packet we just miss the Roswell was so kind to you I have about 5 528 problems like this for you to practice then I bet you you can go through real quick okay so we'll get there all right yes sir all right I'm going to shift my focus back over here now all right so now it looks crooked and I want to here a little bit all right always dreamed of having a convertible car it looks so fancy my flowing hair could flow in the wind as I brought don't laugh at me let's talk about my bald spots I said my flowing hair and all that greatness looks so nice on me as I drive the car all right so my question to you about a convertible car you can have the roof up or Root Down correct yeah the only thing that is different is just what is the same thing so that's what we are going to be learning about today when we talk about converting a mixed fraction into an improper fraction and improper fraction is the top number numerator is bigger than the bottom number which is the denominator a song three different method that and all your homework assignment you will be required to do these three methods okay so you will have homework tonight so here we go I have to get my monitors B lock block method I don't know if that's the truth that mathematicians use but that's what I use OK Google 3 or that's what I thought would and a clock goes from the you could be anywhere on the park but it moves in the direction from ride The Last Ride the lap is that right bottom left right no my God I can't even speak today man this is clockwise put a. I hope you're taking good notes not on the bottom which is your denominator and I'm going to go in a circle motion to the left to the right there is my arrow I made a little circle I wish I could draw like mr. Picasso and draw circles nicely and neatly but that's why I'm a math teacher so I start at 4 and I'm going to multiply so here's my multiplication symbol navigate to put a plus sign between the two and the three okay I am going to start with my. Say it out loud for me for I'm too which is a A+ alarm at 11 to write 11 and where do I start though at the at the four there's my final answer to convert a mixed fraction into an improper one that's it so it becomes 11/4 this year is the exact same thing is this this 11/4 improper fraction the same thing as 2 3/4 as a mixed fraction all right now you like lay us seconds I'm a little confused Mister as well because that just doesn't look the same to me I think your name deramus Roswell well I could have but I'm going to see if I can prove to you that I didn't make a mistake on this decompose so I'm going to show you the methods to make sure the validate your cruise that this is true you ready decompose is when you break things apart into smaller pieces but when I add it back together it becomes to the normal what we always started with so I'm going to say this to you real quickly and you can drop this in your nuts in mr. Rozzelles opinion that the denominator is the most important part of add fraction Mr roswell's opinion the denominator is the most important part of a fraction I'm going to tell you as I go through these example and you understand why okay you're a denominator tells you the group size how many pieces are in a whole does it not it's not the definition of a denominator be the total number of parts that make up a whole so how many parts make up a in this example Dominator on the bottom and my goal is to get to how many on the top part the numerator what I'm going to do it I need to get to 11 there is a 4 did I get to 11 yet so I'm going to make another one 4/4. When I add the numerator because we can't add unless the bottom numbers of the same or the bottom so I'm going to put a sequel to for all right on the bottom denominator of the four plus four that get to 11 yet do I need to add play began Manuel Jimenez or not the same more common there for you so if you come whoever's on Zoom talking I hope that you would unmute thank you now didn't we discuss in our big circle anchor map bad when you have let me see if I have the same numerator and the denominator gives us one so therefore affordable for so that becomes what then your mother for 4 right so what is that the time one also use my little arrow if you can see it my fancy you one and I have a plus sign in between there. that he was not a part-time and then I have a hole with this 3/4 and that's part of a whole so now I'mma put 3/4 and when I add this together I guess how many holes how many how many holes do I have and what is love just the four where is there a half on here sweetheart I'm not even looking at here I'm only looking at this what do I have left that I've not touched and on this route no I'm not even on the blue line I'm only on the red OnePlus One gave me to write so what is left and isn't that the same what I started with now because I know you guys like to be little I like to do art work Mr arousals Picasso artwork what's the send what is the most important part of a fraction in this arousal to bring in how many how many make up a home so how many parts make up a hole in this I cut it into how many parts 44 and this time I'm going to get in how many only three how to get to 11 so here's my floors my denominator and not the shade in how many on this one for it is 1 2 3 4 so that boy is four of them for Plus is my flight time and so am I done did I get the 11 yet so I need to do make a note arts and cut into how many parts for and how many am I going to say to this one 34 and this is for shaded over for how many total have I shared it so far and how many more do I still need to do three more so I need to draw what another another what box and cut it into how many pieces for but this time am I going to see it all for 3 3 and therefore this is really three what is my plus sign because my denominators are the or what's another word for same equal I can keep it there it is and that allows me to do what with the numerator that 1/8 + 311 so therefore it proves that now it's the same let me go back track to something you should have learned in third grade when we have four plus four we said that's a that's a true statement we use what math function where are the same numbers being added no ice yeah I guess so isn't that the same thing as repeated addition the same thing as modification so look what we did here we had two groups of horse two groups of horse so we are really whenever we were talking about mixed fractions if he comes a complete process of understanding all the little parts the two groups of fours or + 4 8 or 4 times 2 is 8 that's what we have when we use the class method okay now I'm going to ask you something and I'm going to do something that's not correct how to draw a picture of 11 / 4 that is not correct and you tell me what I did wrong right so I'm going to go out right here so I'm going to make it there it is so you can see all right I want to go and I'm going to put this is not correct this is wrong and I'm going to use 11/4 Mi fraction okay you ready here's what I'm going to do mr. Malik in the background who's talk to me my apologies did Malik all right 102 679 811 papa papa and I am going through I just threw a picture of a Rajan and I think it's 11 / 4 that's what I just bruised yeah you can tell me why mr. Roswell what Miss Roswell did about this problem that's not correct I think about it why you think about it turn it down to let me go to bed and I'll talk to you okay and that this word wrong should be correct on there what does mythological never makes mistakes because he's so good what are you my right would they know you're saying I mean correct doggone it I hope Damian can tell me that I'm a Rockstar and I did it correctly will come back Tuesday man alright Tommy Barrett what did necrozma do about the incorrect 1190 posed to be oh all right let me see if mr. Damian can validate you tell me that I'm a Rockstar that I did it correctly in that bare it is wrong am I right or is bad it's wrong because you use the the four which is a denominator but by you used as a numerator and then use the eleven of the denominator wrong I'm never wrong there's a thing you're absolutely correct I didn't even thank you for validating mr. You're absolutely correct but here's what's going to happen you're going to have a picture of a frog on your test they can ask you a b c d which picture is correct and I hope that you picked this picture to represent this 11 / 4 stop this the kids the most missed question who the kids who miss it will pick this one and that's because like Barrett and Damien said they move the phone of my numerator and 11 of my denominator is but that's not what it was okay so that's very good observation so I am going to put this here is wrong so big ax that's a big No-No okay I'm glad that you caught on to that because I thought Miss Roswell never makes mistake well I never did be quiet don't tell anybody about when I was wrong yeah yeah I'm not a spelling teacher alright so here's what I like for you do people on campus going to use a 3D Dice and I'm going to explain that very shortly at home please have five problems that you create your own mixed fraction I can use like 1 2 3 345 5 6 7 7 8 9 as a combination of my mixed fractions okay and just go carefully and I like to see your clock method I like you to decompose it and I like to see your picture model and just go slowly okay so that's when we do tomorrow for Mr Martis and Miss Mitchell now go over it with you guys okay so and I will talk to you about how to use your dice to do this okay. Home just make up your own trash is for me okay I'll meet you have to do by Mr said is in 1 digit numbers or 234 by digit numbers 1 digit numbers for your next time for your whole number numeration her and denominator okay all right and then cuz I would have recorded this I will have it downloaded to you my web page before I leave today at 4 okay I'm going to log on
